Chapter 6 (Commonalities & Variations)

While reading Chapter 6, I found it interesting when it read, " At the broadcast level, human cultures evolved in quite similar fashion around the world." I found this quote to be interesting because although people were spread across the world people still lived the same life styles while everything was still evolving. Another quote that caught my attention was, "All of course, were part of that grand process of human migration that initially peopled he planet." This caught my attention because it had me thinking that we wouldn't be here where we are today if earlier humans didn't decide to migrate all over the world. If you truly think about it, if earlier humans didn't migrate we would be living a totally different lifestyle. Lastly, "The world's human population was then distributed very unevenly across the three giant continents" was interesting because i had no idea that it was spread unevenly across the three giantt continents. I wou...

Chapter 5 (Society & Inequality)

While reading Chapter 5, I found it interesting when it read, "Overtime, this system of selecting administrators evolved into the world's professional civil service." I found this quote interesting because although humans started off without leaders they grew over time. I assume they did this because they felt that it would better there civilizations at the time. Another quote that caught my attention was, "Chinese society was unique in the ancient world in the extent to which it was shaped by the actions of the state." This caught my attention because it showed how China's ways of living were so unique that it changed the way others lived around the states. Lastly, "In constructing their societies, however, these second wave civilizations differed substantially from one another" was interesting because while people constructed their societies they made it different from others which made it unique during the second wave.

Ch 4 (Culture & Religion) AND Close Reading of “Serving is Different from Helping and

While reading Chapter 4 , I found it interesting when it read, "As the first civilizations, China had a tradition of state building that historians have traced back to around 200 B.C.E or earlier." I found it interesting because China's traditions must have made a great impact on societies that historians would want to trace back and see how they did the things that they did. Another quote that caught my eye was, "When the Zhou dynasty took power in 1122 B.C.E, the notion of the Mondate of Heaven had already taken root, as had the idea that the normal and appropriate condition of China was one of the political unity." This interested me because it showed had society changed and people started becoming in power and started changing things for the better of themselves. Lastly, "From their reflections emerged classical cultural traditions of chines civilizations" caught my attention because it relates to the first quote, it shows how the Chinese civilizat...

Intro to Part Two & Ch 3 (State & Empire)

While reading Intro to part 2 and chapter 3, I found it interesting when it said, " Even though these First Civilizations broke down, there was no going back." This quote was interesting because it shows that humans continued to make grow together. Even though at first they did not succeed they continue to try and build something for themselves and eventually it all worked out by coming up with all the tools and ideas that we use in the present day. Another quote that caught my attention while reading was, "Civilizations as a form of human community proved durable and resilient as well as a periodically fragile." This quote was very interesting to me because although humans in earlier times  built a strong community it had its flaws, but those flaws we able to be fixed with newer generations and they make the communities better and allowing it to grow as well. Lastly, "In all of these ways, the world became quite different from what it had been in the age of th...

Chapter 2 (First Civilizations)

While reading Chapter 2, I found it interesting when it said "The earliest of these civilizations emerged around 3500 B.C.E to 3000 B.C.E in three places." I found this quote interesting because this civilization evolved in three places and I would assume that each civilization in the three places had a different way of living. Another thing that caught my eye was when it said, "The early civilizations of China, dating perhaps 2200 B.C.E, was very different from that of the Indus valley." This quote was interesting because it backed up my other theory on the last quote about the civilizations in different place doing a completely different lifestyle. Just like in today's society people all around the world live completely different lives and have different whys of living. Lastly, "Recent discoveries suggest that the Olmec may well have created the first written language in the Americans by about 900 B.C.E" caught my attention because I had now idea had...

Chapter 1 (First Farmers), Sections: Breakthroughs to Agriculture to end of Chapter

While reading Chapter 1,  I found it interesting when it   says "Like all other human cultures, Paleolithic  societies had rules and structures." I found this quote interesting because it showed that even years ago humans had always had some type of structure to keep people from doing wrong things. It always showed that over those years humans created more rules and structures as societies started to change and grow. Another quote that caught my eye while reading was, "A gender-based division of labor usually cast men as hunters and women as gathers." This quote had me think back to the earlier times when males were in control of doing all of the hard labor work and women would clean and cook. It shows how not only how society changed but how women grew and started to the "man work". Lastly, "Leaders arose as needed to organize a task such as a hunt, but without conferring permanent power on individuals" caught my attention because it was so diff...

Prologue, Intro to Part One, AND… Chapter 1 (First Peoples), Sections: Out of Africa & The Ways We Were

While reading the prologue and Chapter 1, I found it interesting when it said "The last phase of the great human migration to the ends of the earth took place in the Pacific Ocean and was distinctive in many ways." This quote drew my attention because I had not idea that human migration took place in the Pacific Ocean and it had a impact on how people got all around the world today. It makes you stop and think that the first humans are started together and then they drifted about to start their own lives, start new cultures, and etc. Another thing that caught my attention in this chapter was that "During long journeys across the earth, Paleolithic people created a multitude of separate and distinct societies." This quote goes back to the previous by adding that people in the Paleolithic era created separate and distinct societies. If you truly think about the Paleolithic era you will realize that the people of this era really created the way for us people in today...
